Gear Review: FoodSaver V3240 Automatic Vacuum Sealing System

I know, I know; you would probably prefer to read about some cool new survival gadget, multi-tool, etc., however, anyone serious about food preservation should definitely consider purchasing a vacuum sealer.

A vacuum sealer is not going to replace Mylar Bags for ultra long term storage, but they are great for your short to midterm storage particularly if you a freezing fruits, vegetables and meat. Removing all the air, unlike using regular freezer bags, prevents the dreaded freezer burn that lowers the quality of your frozen food supply.

The unit is super easy to operate, just use the built-in cutter to create the size bag you want, use the ‘Seal’ function to seal the bottom of the bag, fill with whatever you wish, then use the ‘Vacuum Seal’ function to remove the air and seal the bag. For a proper seal be sure to always leave at least 3 inches of room at the top of the bag. The ‘Vacuum Seal’ function has options for Normal or Gentle and Dry or Moist depending on what it is you’re preserving. The unit also has 2 rubber feet and 2 little suction cups that keeps it from sliding around your counter.

We have used the unit to preserve peaches, apples, blackberries, blueberries, pineapple, corn, green beans, pasta noodles, dried beans and even dry cat and dog food. Yes, dry dog food. Dry dog food doesn’t have a very good shelf life, about a year, but the quality deteriorates quickly once opened. To save money we buy the large bags, put some in regular large freezer bags for daily feedings and vacuum seal the rest for longer term storage. This routine allows us to save money by buying in bulk (and reducing trip to the store) while still preserving quality.

I often find good deals on steak (and I LOVE steak) sold in ‘Family Packs,’ but being married to a vegetarian used to prevent me from taking advantage of those deals, not any more. As advertised, vacuum sealing the meat prevents freezer damage and according to their website lengthens safe storage to 2 years vs. 6 months with regular freezer bags.

The FoodSaver brand replacement bags that are sold by the manufacturer are rather pricey, but we found a great deal on replacement bags on Amazon. These bags don’t fit in the top of the unit like the originals, but are much more affordable and get the job done.

This unit has excellent performance, is priced under $100 on Amazon and qualifies for Prime shipping. Buy yours here!

American Blackout – The Movie

Prepper 365

We recently stumbled across a movie called American Blackout by National Geographic. It’s a story of an attack on the US power grid and what might happen in the aftermath. We found it available on YouTube for free and wanted to share it with you. Hope you enjoy! Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Fear is in the air: Gun Sales up more than 30% in First Half of 2016

Recently I had one of those days where you run all over town; drop off this, pick up that kind of thing and decided I would pick up some 9mm ammo while I was out – no big deal. To my surprise, at 1 PM on a weekday, the ‘gun store’ was absolutely packed! No it wasn’t a bunch of ‘crazy rednecks’ with nothing better to do (possibly deplorables,) it wasn’t a bunch of old guys just killing time; no, it was the same crowd you might run into at the grocery store – except they weren’t buying eggs, they were buying guns and ammunition. Note: this is not one of those large ‘sporting goods stores’ this is a very large privately owned gun store – no fishing rods or running shoes here; just guns, ammo and accessories. As I shopped I couldn’t help but notice how many employees were busy explaining the differences between certain guns, and trying to help people make good decisions on purchasing their FIRST gun. One professional looking young couple was trying to decide between several ‘assault style’ rifles comparing features vs. price much as they would any other purchase while an elderly couple was busy comparing revolvers – a sight that would certainly send the Hillary crowd into a complete meltdown. Now, obviously all the customers weren’t first time buyers, but a large number clearly were; so why – what would lead so many people out on a weekday afternoon to buy their very first gun? Really? Have you watched the news? Have you seen what’s going on in the world, in our own Country? Apparently I’m not the only one the only one concerned that our Republic is in serious trouble. Apparently I’m not the only worried about a presidential candidate who openly opposes your 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 10th Amendment rights while her aides are all busy taking the 5th. Apparently I’m not the only one who is concerned that Hillary Clinton could soon be the most powerful person in the world – and you thought the last 8 years were bad. Think about it; I did – decided I needed a few more boxes of 45s as well, and maybe some .223.

Food, Water, Shelter, Security – hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Gear Review: American Red Cross FRX3 Hand Crank NOAA AM/FM Weather Alert Radio with Smartphone Charger

Communication and an understanding of what’s actually taking place during a crisis are key to your proper response and ultimately surviving it. In times such as these it’s imperative to stay informed so you need some way to connect to the outside world even when hunkering down in a crisis. We’ve chosen this American Red Cross Hand Crank radio as part of our preparedness plan.

It can be charged with a wall charger, USB, solar, hand crank or will run on 3 AAA batteries. Note: the AAA batteries will drain if you keep them inside the radio. If the unit is charged, it will charge your cell phone like a battery pack without the need to crank. The small solar panels do a great job of keeping it charged if you simply leave it in the window as we do. We hope to never have to use the crank feature to actually power the radio, but in our experience approximately 2 minutes of cranking will net you 3-5 minutes of radio use.

The radio has AM/FM and 7 weather bands. The reception was fairly strong with the extendable antenna even though I live in a mountainous area. Note: the reception seemed better when the radio was plugged into the wall charger.

The unit also includes a 3 LED light; 2 that can be used as a flashlight and one as a flashing distress signal.

Note: the rechargeable battery pack (seen at the bottom left of the photo) that comes with the unit is NOT plugged in  when it comes out of the box.

Overall the unit performs as advertised. There are higher quality radios available and cheaper radios available, but for under $50 we think this is a solid performer for the money. The unit has a 4 star rating on Amazon and qualifies for Prime shipping.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Fail: Gun Controlled Australia Admits Criminals Still Armed, Launches New Amnesty

Now 20 years after Australia’s massive crackdown on guns, guess who still has guns, come on, you know the answer – yes, the criminals that’s who! Surprise, surprise! Now folks, you and I have all seen those bumper stickers, you know ‘When guns are illegal only criminals will have guns,’ well that certainly seems to be the case in Australia. So why is it that so many in this Country are unable to learn from the failure of others, why do we insist on them failing here too? Look at the policies of the current Administration and the proposed policies of the wannabe Clinton Administration; this stuff has all been tried elsewhere with poor results, so why would any rational person think that they would have a different result here? Single-payer government healthcare is bankrupting the UK, Spain’s Green Energy program has been a huge job killer, and clearly Australia’s strict gun control has failed – do we really have to learn everything the hard way? Did your mom ever ask you ‘if Johnny jumped off a bridge would you jump off a bridge too?’  Mom was right, but too many in this Country still want to jump off that bridge – and they wonder why we’re preppers. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Was massive internet attack just a practice run?

A massive coordinated cyber attack forced hundreds of major companies offline on Friday, including Amazon and Twitter, in what some believe might be a practice run. The attack is said to have come from ‘tens of millions of IP addresses’ likely infected with malware whose owners are probably unaware their PC was even involved. Scary thought.

Some political talking heads are saying it’s a practice run for Election Day, and maybe so; others say it was revenge for cutting off Julian Assange’s internet access, yet another strong possibility. However, a very real and very scary possibility exists that I’m not seeing covered in the media – that it could be the Russians responding to Joe Biden’s threat of a cyber attack on Russia. Remember that just before their invasion of the Ukraine in 2008 and the invasion of Georgia 6 years before that, the former Soviet Union employed very similar ‘denial of service’ attacks. With the current Administration and the Hillary campaign blaming their woes on the Russians, not to mention Biden’s big mouth, would it really be all that surprising?

You may or may not have been affected by the massive interruption of internet services yesterday, but imagine the chaos a full scale attack could cause. Regardless of who is really behind the attack and what their real motive might be, this incident just further demonstrates how fragile our infrastructure really is. Can you imagine the impact on the economy if such an outage went on for a week or even longer? How long do you think the banking system would hold up without access to the internet? How about the electrical grid, water treatment, etc… Not to mention a pampered and overly entitled population ill prepared for any disruption of ‘normal’ life? Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Germans are leaving Germany ‘in droves’ – Syrian ‘Refugees’ tell them to get out!

Yes, you read that right. According to an article on Zero Hedge, Germans are literally being chased out of their own country by the Islamic immigrants their own elected government felt ‘morally obligated’ to allow in, all without the consent of the people.

“We refugees do not want to live in the same country with you. You can, and I think you should, leave Germany. Why do you not go to another country? We are sick of you!”Aras Bacho 18-year old Syrian immigrant.

You read that right, Syria ‘immigrants’ telling German citizens to get out of their own country. And many Germans are; 138,000 left in 2015 with even more expected to leave this year. Germans are abandoning their homes and neighborhoods in ‘droves’ to escape the increasing violence including an ‘epidemic of rape and sexual assault.’

Americans have long been known for thinking ‘it could never happen here,’ but are you sure? Our own government seems hell bent on importing thousands of these same ‘refugees’ into your neighborhood and again, all without the consent of the people. Europe is losing its culture along with its security – and as we follow the same path can we reasonably expect a different outcome? I for one have always believed that if America was to fall it would come from within. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
