Prepper Garden Update 4-23-18

Here comes spring! Old man winter has been pretty rough on a lot of us this year, and has definitely worn out his welcome even here in the South. Following some great successes (and some failures) last year, we can’t wait to get gardening! We hope to build on last year, while tweaking a few things for the better. Home Depot just delivered an entire pallet of Kellogg’s organic potting mix and supplies to build more beds, the buckets are prepped and ready to plant and the seedlings are growing!

This year’s list includes:

  • Green beans
  • Snow peas
  • Bell peppers
  • Banana peppers
  • Corn
  • Popcorn (yes, popcorn)
  • Tomatoes
  • Honey Dew
  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumbers
  • Carrots
  • Radishes
  • Dill
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Basil

I’m probably missing a few there, but will update this periodically and hope you will share your progress with us.

A few changes this year; we will grow fewer peppers in buckets and more in a new bed we are building. We will NOT be growing Jalapenos this year (OK maybe a few) as we really over did it last year. The buckets used for peppers last year will be replaced with more strawberries and blueberries. Our current blueberry bushes are blooming and the strawberries are putting on new growth.  We hope to add a few more peach and apple trees this year, the ones we planted last year all look good with the exception of one peach that, well, just doesn’t look too good. We will continue to plant the green beans and peas in stages to extend the season, but plan on doubling the amount of both in hopes of preserving more.

Happy gardening!
